Underground Railroad Tours and Reenactments
The Underground Railroad is significant to our American history because it played a major role in the freedom of runaway slaves. Dr. James Still's brother, William Still, was instrumental in this movement and our site was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad. Dr. Still and his family were very active in Colemantown, which is now Mount Laurel and we share the story of their struggles and ground-breaking triumphs in our historical tours and reenactments. In fact, we include reenactors who play Charity Still (Dr. Still's mother), Harriet Tubman, and other members involved in slavery and the Civil War era.
For more than 11 years, Pastor Person, who is Dr. Still's great-great-grandson, has been hosting a lively powerpoint presentation on slavery in America; a film on William Still's role as the Father of the Underground Railroad; a Jeopardy!®-style quiz, a tour of the historic Colemantown Meeting House; and a tour of the cemetery, where many of the Still family members and Civil War soldiers are buried. The purpose of the Underground Railroad Tours and Reeanctments is to educate participants about slavery, the life and legacy of Dr. Still's family (former slaves), and the impact their contributions have made on the local African-American heritage, the state of New Jersey, and the nation.
Our target audience is a group of individuals interested in historical figures and sites in America. We welcome schoolchildren, historical societies, restoration groups, preservation groups, genealogists, tourists, and others. The tours are held at Jacob's Chapel and can be scheduled at your convenience. We can also bring our presentations to your facility. We hope to see you and your group soon.
